Volunteer Roles

Evening Collections

Volunteers visit participating businesses and collect surplus food which would otherwise be put into landfill. The food is then returned to the hub, weighed and logged.

Hub Duty:

This role involves opening the community fridge, and sharing food with the community. It involves encouraging the community to pay as they feel and value the food, engaging in food conversations, and maintaining the space as friendly, accessible, and clean. Wednesdays & Fridays 10 am to 3 pm

Bwyd Dyfi Hub Fruit & Veg Box Team:

On Tuesdays, 11 am to 2 pm volunteers help with operating the Bwyd Dyfi Hub, making up local produce boxes of fruit, veg, eggs, cheese, meat. Various roles are available; in the morning - helping with opening checks, portioning fruit & veg, making up customer boxes and in the afternoon, meeting and greeting customers who come to collect. We also have opportunities if you’re interested in marketing, film making and photography. Help us increase the local food economy!

Clean Teams:

We believe that we all have a shared responsibility to maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the hub. We also have dedicated cleaning teams whose specific focus is to keep the Hub clean and fresh, and complete Opening and Closing checks and cleaning on each Community Pantry day. These daily checks are both important to maintain hygiene standards, and in order to meet food safety standards. We also have a Deep Clean Team who meets the first Monday of the month for an hour to do monthly cleaning tasks.

Composting and Waste Team:

This role involves collecting the food waste from the hub and taking it to our composting site located near the Penparcau allotments. You can transport the compost using the hub bike and trailer (training provided).

There is also a volunteering role for someone to put the bins out early on a Tuesday morning.

Tyfu Aber Grow:

The Tyfu Aber Grow community gardening group look after the Trefechan Community Garden and a garden at the Hub. Here we are growing mostly herbs for our Community Kitchen and providing a space in nature for relaxation and socialising. This role is suitable for anyone interested in being outdoors - no experience is required, and we also welcome experienced gardeners!

Welsh Translation:

We strive to be as inclusive as possible, and this includes making our premises, website and social media welcoming to welsh speakers - to this end we are looking for bilingual individuals / groups to help us by undertaking translations of key documents, social media, posters and displays.

Admin Support:

Task focused, including supporting the processing of volunteer application forms; transferring food logging data to computer; book-keeping…..

Dehydrator Team

Creating dehydrated food items to save perishable food eg dried onion, apple, mango etc

    • Ad-hoc opportunity to experiment with and help deal with gluts of surplus. You will be notified on an evening if there’s an abundance of surplus that can be dehydrated

    • Get inducted into using the new 36-tray commercial dehydrator

Event Support:

There are a variety of support roles including: setting up venues; welcoming people to the space; preparing food; serving food; washing up….

Odd Jobs/Maintenance

Activities may include small repairs, painting, putting up notice boards, and other practical tasks to improve and maintain the facilities.

Skills: Problem-solving mindset. Willing to follow safety guidance

Time commitment: Flexible – estimated 2–4 hours per month
